#FringeFemmes Check-Ins: Perimenoparty

WHO: Irene Serrano

WHAT: Perimenoparty: The Welcome Party to a Stage of Life You Can’t Escape

WHERE: Actors Company (The Little Theater), 916 N. Formosa Ave.

WHY: Because there’s too much noise around perimenopause and not enough laughs. Irene Serrano has crafted a hilarious, tender Spanglish world premiere solo clown show. It is rooted in the traditional European circus archetypes of Augusto (Irene’s period) and Carablanca (Irene’s wait for menopause). She physically embodies the mischievous nature of menstruation, from the first to the last, so well. Dressed in a red unitard and red nose, Irene moves around a hospital bed pad with the agility of a wayward period. Splatting off to the side upon occasion. She punctuates the humor of her clown work with projections, puppetry and karaoke while dressed in a tea-length party dress. The jokes and physical comedy are emotionally complex and hilarious. You will laugh so hard  that you can skip core work for a week.

Fringe Femmes

WHO: Linzy Beltran

WHAT: El Mago Loco

WHERE: The Cats Crawl, 660 N Heliotrope Dr

WHY: Because Linzy Beltran blows your mind with her fearlessness, candor, and heart at a time when our city needs it most. Because her physical soliloquy – where she glitches in and out of Latino stereotypes, falsities, and cultural behaviors – was mesmerizing and executed with off-kilter precision, power, and authenticity.

Because El Mago holds space with tenderness and fire, daring us to think together about the hard truths without ever losing our joy. Because the way the character transitions through moments is so fluid, it’s hard to tell what’s improvised and what’s choreographed.

Because this was my first clown show, and I left the theatre empowered, not defeated. Because Linzy reminds us in the funniest of ways that now is not the time to turn the other cheek, for we are in exigent times.

#FringeFemmes Check-Ins: The Living Room

by Constance Strickland

Fringe Femmes

WHO: Amrita Dhaliwal + Gemma Soldati

WHAT: The Living Room

WHERE: Theatre of NOTE, 1517 North Cahuenga Bl

WHY: A woman in a black dress with her face hidden from the audience marks lines on a chalkboard. Silent. We see only the bounce her body makes as she writes on a small board. There’s something about this action that becomes unsettling but, but your fears are set aside as an abrupt entrance brings  the room to immediate laughter. This Dynamic Duo’s energy, chemistry and timing are a theatrical treat that will take you outside yourself and on an unexpected emotional journey with a room full of strangers. The Living Room is a place where many families gather together in joy and sorrow. A room of memories.

This show is a wonderful examination and celebration of life and death. By the end of the show you won’t quite understand how, but you’ll find yourself speaking aloud.
