WHAT: In Search of Black People

WHERE: The Broadwater (Studio), 1078 Lillian Way

WHY: In this captivating piece of true storytelling, Roz Browne takes you from her childhood beginnings in Boston to a church group trip to Africa, always “In Search of Black People.”

Roz tells her story with such detail, humor and thoughtful reflection that the audience is left feeling like they have not just been told about the characters in the story, but actually introduced to them. First, in anecdotes from her early life, we meet her family as they move from one Boston neighborhood to another. Aided by real video footage, we then see the moment decades later when family members open the results of their DNA kits to find answers about their roots.

Inspired to travel to Africa, Roz, her sister and her mother do so as part of a church group. Here we are treated to the drama between church members and the daily proverbs of the tour guide as the group experiences the sights, sounds and tastes of the land. The payoff for this journey is an understanding and appreciation for family, community and a sense of belonging.

WHO: Marie Sadd

WHAT: The Bone Lady

WHERE: Skiptown Playhouse, 655 N. Heliotrope Dr

WHY: This play, inspired by Marie Sadd’s conversations with a real-life osteologist, is a delightfully macabre two-hander. Surrounded by human skeletal remains and towers of bankers boxes, the Bone Lady is cheerfully passionate about her profession as she recruits a much less enthusiastic participant for her lecture on the tales the bones tell.

Sharp, funny, and educational, this play leaves us thinking about our own mortality and what happens to us when we die—not only our souls, but the earthly bodies we inhabit.

WHO:  Brenda “BK” Wong

WHAT: Intrusive Thoughts

WHERE:  Asylum @ Stephanie Fuery Studio Theatre (Mainstage), 5636 Melrose Av

WHY: Brenda “BK” Wong shares personal experience with intrusive and destructive thinking, leading the audience to realize that those thoughts just aren’t helpful! Through her story, BK leaves us with a choice: give in to the intrusive thoughts or choose positivity. I can’t wait to see this new writer develop a team of support. Yes, one day, she may have more actors and more set pieces, though they don’t need to look any better or be any better than what is at heart a raw and personal portrayal. BK’s debut as the unlikely hero of her own story resonates with personal vulnerability, humor and a whole lot of positivity. Honored to see this first performance from a writer who I look forward to seeing back at fringe again soon. Keep writing BK, your stories matter!
